Artist, Mika Cali in NYC
I started my career in fine art attending NYC's Art Students league in 1996 and have since studied at Rhode Island School of Design, Central Saint Martins and the Fashion Institute of Technology until graduating (BFA) from Parsons The New School for Design in 2006.
I have always created with a wide variety of mediums in various fields - from sculpture and furniture design to printmaking, painting, graphic and fashion design. My current focus has been on the Symbol Series and Resin Series, incorporating natural minerals, resin, acrylic, found objects, weathered wood and rusted metal.
I get a lot of questions about the meaning behind the symbols. Very often I draw shapes that resemble space ships or rockets that I imagine, with the help of lighting bolts of energy, are being catapulted into the sky to infinite heights. Although the meanings behind the symbols vary, they are almost always telling a story of strength, pushing boundaries, staying positive and maintaining balance. The paintings really started as messaging for myself - a hidden story in each piece that I could put on my walls as constant and encouraging reminders. For more about my symbols, check out the shop.
